DOG BITE PREVENTION TIPS

  • Never pet a dog without asking the owner first and if the dog is friendly.  don’t assume that a dog won’t bite just because it may look friendly.
  • Never pet a dog when it is sleeping, eating, or chewing on a toy.
  • Never approach or pet a dog that is growling or barking.
  • If a loose dog approaches never run or scream, stay still, quiet, and avoid direct eye contact.
  • Never try to pet a dog in a car, behind a window, wall or fence.  never reach for or pet a dog that is behind a barrier.
  • If a child or person is being attacked by a dog they should curl up on the ground protecting vital organs of the body from attack as best as possible.
  • Never pet or approach a scared, anxious, or fearful dog.
  • Never hit or tease a dog.
  • Dogs are not stuffed animals.  they do not like hugs and kisses to the face, and this is the number one cause of dog bites to the face of children.
  • Be proactive with children teaching them safe bite prevention skills around dogs.
