HOW TO POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY FIRST THINGS FIRST!

“The 2 Golden Rules”

What is the “GOLDEN RULE?”  First and foremost the most important rule in Potty Training your new puppy or older dog is:

  • RULE #1. “SUPERVISE AND WATCH YOUR DOG AT ALL TIME OR YOUR DOG GOES IN ITS DOGGIE CRATE!”

You will never get your puppy or dog potty trained if you can not correct your dog’s accidents “in the act” at the exact moment “Fluffy” is peeing or pooping in your house!

While you are potty training your new puppy or older dog, and you have 21 Days with NO accidents, you need to keep your new puppy or older dog with you ON A LEASH AT ALL TIMES!  If you cannot watch your dog and have “Fluffy” with you by your side on a leash, then your puppy or dog has to be in his or her doggie crate!

  • RULE #2.  “WHEN YOUR DOG IS NOT IN THE DOGGIE CRATE, KEEP YOUR HIM/HER WITH YOU ON LEASH AT ALL TIMES IN YOUR SIGHT NO MATTER WHAT!

In order to successfully potty train your new puppy or older dog you have to have “Fluffy” with you to teach the “NO” of going potty in the house and the “YES” of going potty outside.  Your dog has to have you be there with them to teach this.

Puppies and dogs only learn what you teach them and what you allow.  The biggest mistake dog owners make when trying to potty train is to let their puppy or dog out of sight and this allows the puppy or dog to have unseen, uncorrected potty accidents in the house.  This leads to the dog into thinking that it is “OK” to go in the house and anywhere else the dog wants to go potty.

WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO HOW TO POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY  TIMING IS EVERYTHING!

“Correcting & Rewarding in the act”

how to potty train a puppy timing

The next most important thing to learn and to practice religiously is that “TIMING IS EVERYTHING!”

The way puppies and dogs learn is in the moment, in the now, in the act.  You have less than a ½ second to pair a correction to interrupt your dog’s unwanted “no behavior” of potty accidents in the house, and less than a ½ second to pair a reward with your dogs “yes behavior” of going potty outside in the “potty place!”

  • RULE #3. “YOU HAVE TO CORRECT YOUR DOGS POTTY ACCIDENTS IN THE ACT, AND YOU HAVE TO REWARD YOUR DOG WHEN HE/SHE IS GOING POTTY OUTSIDE IN THE CORRECT POTTY PLACE IN THE ACT OR YOUR DOG WILL NEVER LEARN TO “CONNECT THE DOTS!”

You have to watch your dog at all times and have your dog with you on leash by your side so when he/she has a potty accident you are their to correct the “NO BEHAVIOR” – the potty accident in the act as it is occurring.  If you correct your dog, even 5 seconds after the fact, “Fluffy” will have no understanding why he or she is being corrected.

The same rule holds true about teaching your dog where to go potty outside in the correct “Potty Place.”  You need to physically take “Fluffy” outside to the correct “Potty Place” on leash on a regular “Potty “Schedule.”  You need to have hidden on your person some “high value” treats like small cut up pieces of cheese or small cut up pieces of cooked chicken.

ALL ANIMALS ARE MOTIVATED BY REWARDS.  THE BIGGER THE REWARD THE BETTER THE MOTIVATION TO PERFORM AND DO THINGS RIGHT; That being said, pull out the “Big Guns” when it comes to food rewards when potty training.  Find what your puppy or dog likes “the best.”  In most cases it is a human food treat that they rarely or never get.  Stay away from bland dog treats or kibble that may offer little motivation to your puppy or dog.  Reward your puppy or dog with super high value food rewards when your dog or puppy goes potty in the correct “Potty Place” until you have NO ACCIDENTS for 21 Days!

Remember in learning how to potty train a puppy you have to reward in “the act” of going potty right when it is happening in the correct “potty place” Also keep in mind you have less than a ½ second to pair a food reward with your puppy or dog’s correct behavior of going potty outside in the correct “potty place.”  You have to reward your dog in the act in the exact moment when your dog is squatting and in the act of going potty for your dog to learn and “connect the dots.”

Let’s go over some key points to remember in how to potty train a puppy so far.

HOW TO POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY PAWFECT POTTY TRAINING IS AS EASY AS 1….2….3….

  • RULE #1. IN HOW TO POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY “SUPERVISE AND WATCH YOUR DOG AT ALL TIME OR YOUR DOG GOES IN ITS DOGGIE CRATE!”

  • RULE #2. IN HOW TO POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY “WHEN YOUR PUPPY OR DOG IS NOT IN THE DOGGIE CRATE, KEEP YOUR NEW PUPPY OR OLDER DOG WITH YOU ON LEASH AT ALL TIMES IN YOUR SIGHT NO MATTER WHAT!

  • RULE #3. IN HOW TO POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY “IF YOU WANT TO GET YOUR DOG SUCCESSFULLY POTTY TRAINED, YOU HAVE TO CORRECT YOUR DOG’S POTTY ACCIDENTS IN THE ACT, AND YOU HAVE TO REWARD YOUR PUPPY OR DOGS GOING POTTY OUTSIDE IN THE CORRECT “POTTY PLACE” IN THE ACT OR YOUR DOG WILL NEVER LEARN TO “CONNECT THE DOTS!”  TIMING IS EVERYTHING!

  • The biggest mistake new puppy or older dog owners make when learning how to potty train a puppy is to let their puppy or dog out of sight and this allows the puppy or dog to have unseen, uncorrected potty accidents in the house.

  • Reward your puppy or dog with super high value food rewards when your dog or puppy goes potty in the correct “Potty Place” EVERY TIME until you have NO ACCIDENTS for 21 Days!

We have already talked about rewards.  The fact that they should be “high value” rewards like small pieces of cheese that you have and the importance of rewarding in the act within a ½ second of “Fluffy” squatting to pee in the correct “potty place.” It is important to reserve special food treats for only going potty outside in the correct “potty place”. By holding back food rewards and treats and saving them for only potty training, “fluffy” will be more motivated to go potty in the right place and you will have faster success in potty training your puppy or dog!

I need to address and spend a minute talking more about corrections, and especially corrections when potty training.

As I stated earlier in this potty training guide, you have to correct “Fluffy” in the act.  You have a ½ a second or less to pair a correction with the “NO Behavior” of your dog going potty in your house.

When correcting a puppy or dog for potty training, I recommend and like using a dog whistle.  There are many reasons that I like and use a dog whistle to correct a dog for going potty in the house.

I don’t believe a puppy or any dog needs to experience fear, pain or intimidation to learn.

Dogs learn best by gentle or neutral (non punishing) interruptions of unwanted behavior, and positive reinforcement of the correct behavior when our timing of reward and corrections are in the moment as the desired act or unwanted act is happening.

NEVER USE A CORRECTION THAT CAUSES FEAR PAIN OR INTIMIDATION WHEN POTTY TRAINING YOUR PUPPY OR OLDER DOG.

When learning how to potty train a puppy, many dog and new puppy owners make the mistake of using punishment to correct their puppy or dog when potty training.  This can cause stress in the puppy or dog and can make the problem worse. Studies have shown that many puppies and dogs have an increase in potty accidents when punishment is used.

Puppies and Dogs can urine mark and or defecation mark because of anxiety and stress.  Both punishment, any kind of “fear, pain, and intimidation,” in addition to poor timing of corrections such as coming home to an accident that may have happened 15 minutes ago and scolding, hitting, or rubbing your dog’s or puppy’s nose in the mess will only make potty training worse, and take a lot longer.

Instead of punishment based correction try just correcting your dog by interrupting your puppy or dog’s behavior.

A non-threatening sound can get your new puppy or dog’s attention and interrupt an unwanted behavior like having a potty accident in the house.

Benefits of using a dog whistle to interrupt your dog’s unwanted potty accidents are many.

HOW TO POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY and DOG CRATE TRAINING

“It’s a doggie den, safe place, NOT a

Jail or Punishment”

I want to discuss some brief issues about crate training.  There is not time in this book to go in-depth into all of the steps to successfully and properly crate train your puppy or older dog, especially if you have a difficult puppy or dog to crate train.

Complete and in-depth information and steps to Successful Crate Training EVEN THE MOST DIFFICULT DOG OR PUPPY can happen in as little as JUST 7-DAYS!

For the purposes of this eBook on Potty Training, we need to be clear that a crate is a vital tool to successful potty training.

Some new puppy or dog owners feel bad about having to crate their puppy or dog, in some cases, even for short periods of time.  A few dog and puppy owners have the wrong idea about a crate, and view it as punishment, a jail cell for their puppy or dog, and may not realize that all puppies and dogs have a “den” instinct that is experienced by the puppy or dog as a safe, calm place, with a strong genetic and biological basis for it’s behavior.

HOW TO POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY TEACHING THE “POTTY PLACE”

Train Your Puppy or Dog to Go Outside in the right spot EVERY TIME!

Wouldn’t it be nice if your dog could learn to go potty outside in the correct spot every time? Your dog can and will!

First we need to discuss what the “potty place” is, how to create it, and then how to teach your new puppy or dog to use the outside “potty place” every time!

The “potty place” is a specific location that is created by using PVC pipe as a visually identifiable area and boundary where your new puppy or dog will be taught to go potty every time.

To build the “potty place” is very easy. If you don’t have any PVC lying around or anything similar, you can always go to your local hardware store. But you’re going to want your potty place to be 8×4 feet.

Once built, find an easy and convenient place in your yard area for your new dog or puppy’s outside potty place.

Once we have built our potty place and once we find a good location to put it we are ready to teach you and your dog how to use this and learn to go potty outside in the correct place every time!

Remember we had discussed earlier that it is absolutely important to supervise your new puppy or dog at all times or they need to be in their dog crate.  We need to be able to correct wrong “NO Behavior” in the act every time for successful potty training.  We also need to reward every correct “YES Behavior” every time your puppy or new dog goes potty in the correct outside potty place every time.

In the beginning of your potty training it is absolutely important to bring your dog outside to the “potty place” very often.  I recommend at a minimum you take your dog out to the outside potty place at least every two hours while you are teaching your dog to be successfully potty trained.” When you take your dog outside to the potty place be sure to leash your dog.  This will be important to lead and guide your puppy or dog to the correct place, and to stay there until they go potty.

Most puppies and dogs will go to the bathroom within the first 4 or 5 minutes you take them outside.  There is no need to keep your puppy and yourself outside for a half an hour or longer. It is best to get your puppy to the potty place often, to do its business quick, and to get back in the house.  We want to make sure that your new puppy or dog is sure what the potty place is for, and that it is not about messing around, but for leaving their mess!

If you want to know when the best times are to get your dog outside to go potty in the correct potty place with success, you should keep a POTTY JOURNAL.

Keeping and maintaining a potty journal is easy. Every time your dog goes potty you write this time in your potty journal.  This will include pee and poop.  You will note in your journal: each time your dog eats, each time your puppy or dog drinks water, and each and every time your new puppy or dog goes potty or poop in the house. As well as each time your puppy or dog goes potty or poop outside.

By keeping a journal, we can begin to predict when your puppy or dog will need to go potty or poop, this is absolutely important so we can preempt an accident and wrong “NO Behavior” and to ensure more success in getting good “YES Behavior” by taking your new puppy outside to go potty in the correct place.

In your journal you want to note how long after your dog eats, that he or she poops.  You want to note after your puppy drinks water, how long it is after your puppy goes potty.

By keeping track of what goes in…(water & food), we can learn to predict when things will come out…(pee & poop) This is done so that when you find your dog’s bathroom cycle, you can be sure to get outside with your new puppy or dog at just the right time, every time.  By doing this we will have much greater success with potty training, and this process will be trained much faster.

If you discover that every time your dog eats, lets say 30 minutes later there is a poop accident or the puppy had gone poop outside 30 minutes later and this becomes a pattern, you will come to realize if we want to be successful, we should get your puppy outside to poop 25 minutes after he or she eats.  We can predict when poop will happen. The same rationalization and idea holds true for potty as well.  If you find that 45 minutes after your new puppy or dog drinks water that there is almost always a pee accident or there is successful pee happening at the outside potty place, you know that it is best to get your puppy or dog outside to the potty place at around 40 minutes after they drink.

After just a few days keeping a potty journal, you will see a pattern emerge as to your new puppy or dog’s potty habits and behavior.  Use this to your advantage when learning how to potty train a puppy!

Another important item of information that should be noted in your potty journal is how many times your new puppy or dog will pee or poop in a potty break.  Don’t assume that if your puppy or dog poops one time outside in the correct potty place that you have success. How many times does your puppy poop?  Some dogs and puppies poop two or three times when let out to go poop.  Some puppies and dog’s pee three or four times when outside.  Many puppy and dog owners make the mistake of bringing their new puppy or dog back in the house after one poop or one pee, only to experience an immediate pee or poop accident inside as soon as they come back into the house.

“Many puppy and dog owners make the mistake of bringing their new puppy or dog back in the house after one poop or one pee, only to experience an immediate pee or poop accident inside as soon as they come back into the house.”

So we have built the “potty place,” kept a journal to help us predict when your new puppy or dog needs to eliminate, and we have done a great job of supervising or confining in the doggie crate.

We need to remember that dogs learn in the “here and now,” and they learn by immediate consequences and immediate rewards.  Remember we need to correct your dog in the act by interrupting the “NO Behavior” and reward with food the “YES Behavior” as your dog eliminates in the correct outside “potty place.”

You will want to bring your new puppy or dog out to the “potty place” very often.  I recommend every hour if possible. When you take your dog or puppy to the potty place have your dog on leash, take your puppy to the potty place. Keep your dog in the confines of the clearly identified potty place. Make sure you have food rewards to immediately reward your dog as it eliminates.

As your new puppy goes potty or poop, you want to OVERLAY an ELIMINATION COMMAND OR CUE; I recommend one word that is used for both potty and poop.  I like to use the word “potty.”

It is important to note that eventually if you consistently overlay a command or cue at the exact instant “Fluffy” goes poop or potty and then to immediately reward with food, “Fluffy” will eventually learn that the command or cue, “potty” means to eliminate.  This process usually takes 30 to 50 repetitions before your new puppy or dog will connect the dots so to speak and understand that the command means the behavior we are rewarding.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER ACCIDENT CLEAN UP IN HOW TO POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY!

how to potty train a puppy clean up

Dogs have a nose that is 10,000 times stronger than that of their human owners.  There are many cleaning and odor removal products that do a good job of getting the stain out and getting the odor out at a human level.  You need special products with the power to get the odor out at the level of the dog’s super scent abilities.

There are two products that work great, they are, Nature’s Miracle, or Get Serious Extractor.  Make sure you read the directions carefully and use as directed.

Another useful tool is the have a blacklight or UV accident detector for finding EVERY accident.  Many new puppy or dog owners are surprised when they find many accidents that they never new about by UV detection.

I don’t like the dog to see me cleaning up any accidents, so I make sure that he/she is crated and out of sight of the cleaning process.

Once you have identified all accident areas by UV light detection, clean up the accidents with Nature’s Miracle, or Get Serious Extractor.  Be sure to come back to the accident area 24 hours later with your UV black light to ensure the stain and odors are gone for good.

The next step is to mark the territory with your scent.  It would be silly to mark over your dog with your urine, but you can simulate this by taking a small amount of deodorant you may wear daily and marking over the accident.

This is easy to do. Take a Q-Tip cotton swab, apply a small amount of your deodorant to it, and rub the deodorant across the area where your new puppy or dog peed or pooped.

This will have the same effect as marking and taking back your territory.

It can be additionally effective to take your new dog or puppy back to the accident areas and do some basic obedience commands like sitting and staying in the exact area where your dog or puppy has had an accident.

Q: “Should I invest and obtain a dog door to help with potty training and how to potty train a puppy?”

A: In difficult cases it can help to have a dog door and place a double door dog crate up against the dog door.

With a crate/dog door set up, the one door is removed off of the dog crate.  The crate is placed up flush with the dog door.  Your new puppy or dog can leave the confines of the dog crate and go outside.  Your puppy or new dog can also come in through the dog door into the house, but is limited to just inside the dog crate, This setup is good to avoid in home accidents, and is good for the puppy or dog who will have accidents in the dog crate.

The down side of a doggie door is that many new puppy or dog owners will forego formal potty training and just depend on the doggie door/crate set up.

There is no short cut to proper potty training, and if you don’t follow all the steps provided in this training guide, you may have setbacks or a much more difficult time in successful potty training.

If you do follow all of the steps in this potty training guide, you should be able to teach any new puppy or dog to be potty trained in about 5 to 7 days.  By having diligent follow up for two weeks longer, you should have relative permanence in potty training in just 21 days.

If you have a puppy or dog that needs crate training, be sure to download our Guide on Crate Training.

Consistency and patients will go a long way in your potty training success as well as following EACH and EVERY step.  Good Luck and happy tails.
